X-COM #7: The Awakening

After that last report, with all that sensitivity....Well, yeah, it's how I would probably would sound, but it doesn't match the non-serious nature of this, as well as games in general. Reminded me of Harry Potter. Think, if Harry Potter was written with the sort of care free attitude. "Oh, Mad-Eye didn't make it back? Well, dang, he was a great fighter. Eye was pretty freaky though." Yeah, if I were using random forum names, it would have been written like that, but with real people.....ah well, I'm thinking of changing it up. Just a warning, this report is long enough without the extra story line, but the time is now to throw it in.

Tyson left the General's quarters. How had he caused all this? There were still many unanswered questions. But from what he had seen, it seemed like the General was being honest. Either way, he had to tell Kevin, they had both wondered about this. He hurried off. Kevin was waiting at the living quarters, those on the last mission wouldn't be back for a couple hours. "Hey, Tyson, what's up?"
"Oh, not much. Well, actually, I've just been speaking to the General." Kevin had known about his plans before hand. "Really? What did he say?" Kevin was interested.
"It's confusing, really. He said that...I was the reason everyone was here. I don't know how, I doubt even the General knows..." He tapered off.
"Huh, does he even know everything that's going on? How would he not know?" Kevin was thinking ahead.
"I don't know. But he isn't the top dog, I guess you could say. I think he just coordinates everything around here. Doesn't make much sense, does it? I don't think a general would have chosen us for this job anyway."
"Right." Kevin was thinking. "What else did he say?"
"Well, at the end he seemed to think that I would have known what was going on. I don't know, I probably should have asked him more."
"You think he'll still talk to you?"
"Yeah, I just think that he was annoyed by me accusing him. He seems like a good guy."
"Right. So, is that all he said. That some how you've sorta been chosen for this or something?"
"Chosen for some unknown reason. He said it was dealing with daydreams...." Tyson just went ahead and related everything that the general said. After about half an hour, Kevin sat back.
"Strange. I guess I don't know what to say. So, Earth is under attack, and we're chosen...."
"Yeah, I'm still a little boggled. Can't say that I like being responsible for all of this...."
Kevin nodded, but didn't respond.

Looking over at X-COM USA, I realize that it is located particularly close to the Mexican border. I think that it would be an excellent place for a factory complex, considering this location. I would want to produce laser pistols, and then sell them, basically starting my own business venture, just in case this whole X-COM thing doesn't work out. But first I decide to do some math, just to see the expected profits. Laser pistols cost $8000 per unit, but sell for $20,000. That's a profit of $12,000 per unit right off. But then I want to subtract the engineer cost. It takes 300 engineer hours (or hours, basically) to produce 1 laser pistol. In a 30 day month, there are 720 hours, so there should be 2.4 laser pistols produced each month, per engineer. Selling these 2.4 would get me $28,800, and minusing the one month salary, I'm only making 3,800 dollars per month. That's bad for business.

Instead of going with the traditional money production, I check out Alien Alloys. But that would end up getting me only $200 per month. Looks like the business venture is over. But that's not all. I had already put down a workshop at X-COM USA, and that cost $800,000. Hoping to get back some of my investment, I dismantle the facility, only to realize that I get nothing back. Noooooooooooooooooo! I drop the game and reload, that was basically all I had done. After selling stuff (and not building stuff) I have $724,000 thereabouts. I have 20 living quarters left at EuroCom, but I don't want more rookies yet, not until the end of march. I have 25 soldiers right now, and I will likely get 10 for April. The Skyranger is refueling, and I've got Tyson A., Kevin D., Mijo, Devyn E., Britt P., Mary A., Chlesea W., Maria P., Melissa W., and Jacque A. (those last two haven't done a mission yet. Lucky saps)

I do buy a general stores for X-COM USA, and on March 26 radar and the hangar are both completed. I send the old Interceptor-2 over there, at a cost of $1,700. Apparently they have to wax the hangar, or something. The general stores is almost done, so I'll send over some missiles then. Hopefully any Atlantic aliens will be crushed by the powerful (and tasty) "Interceptor Sandwhich." The engineers finish 25 laser pistols, I give them a 15 second break and send them to work on 25 more( I've got to pay them no matter what) Also, UFO Navigation finishes, so I'm researching flying suits, the highest form of armor, and what I'll be building next. I will say my 70 scientist research team seems to be doing well. But I think I'll get some more in April as well....

As the dreaded 4th month approaches, eyes once again turn to Buenos Aires...(who will never live that down.) Two days before the end of the month, flying suits are done. (!)

Google confirms there is no higher armor, and so I decide to build...5 of them. Ok, they seem pricey. E-115 is the primary factor here, and I only have 100 of them. I can build power armor, which only has 10 less armor per side for 1/3 the E-115. So that's the plan.

And just when expected, the aliens rear their ugly heads..... I swap Britt P. for Courtney J. This time I confirm everyone has armor(even the MS) and away we go.... About half way there I realize I left a heavy plasma at home. Somebody smack me, but I don't want to turn back, as the Skyranger can only go Mach 1. I think we'll be fine. Though it's been easy for a while....

Bombay is a long way away from the base, both Tyson and Kevin were on this mission. It had been a few days since their talk. Kevin started up.
"So, how you feeling about this whole recruitment thing?"
"How can you feel, knowing you're the reason that you're friends are here?"
"Ahh, look, you can't be getting down on yourself, it isn't really your fault." Tyson just gave him a look. A look that meant 'Are you kidding?'
"Well, ok, you did get us all into this. But wasn't the whole thing because you wanted us to be heros?"
"Yeah, but that's no reason for us to be fighting."
"I know, but the aliens are invading. It's just like the General said. This program is the only hope for the prevention of an Alien Invasion. If we weren't here, it's likely the aliens would end up invading Earth anyway. And then we'd be fighting there too. Either way, we'd have to fight for our survival. And now we have the opportunity to hit them pre-emptivly. You know?"
Tyson was just thinking. Yes, he knew it was true.
"What I'm trying to say is, whether or not you brought us here, we would all end up fighting the aliens anyway. Sure, it's your fault we're here, but not your fault that the aliens are invading. And now we get the best weapons, armor, equipment, whatever it is, we're getting the best stuff available. I think this is for the best."
Tyson thought this over. "I guess you're right. But what if we die?" It was a legit question.
"We'll go down like heroes. Ask any of us, we wouldn't choose to be anywhere else, especially with our friends out there on the line."
"Yeah....you're right. You know, you're right. Let's get out there and finish this."
"Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!" As the mood lifted, Tyson realized he would be in a commanding position on this mission as well. Alright then, bring it on.

Despite Tyson's command position, this post is really long without it. Perhaps on the next one, I'll see what I can do, but I'm going old style with this. Also, it was all written while it was happening, so when I sound surpriesed, I was. Except for a couple extras, it's completely original. The loadout is Kevin, Tyson, Mary, and Maria with Heavy Plasma, Courtney with the rocket, and the rest with laser rifles. Sadly, this mission is at night....

As the tank rolls off, I see two large houses to my right, and some structures to the left. I glance around the houses, can't see anything, but when I turn around.....uh oh. 3 Sectoids, all just standing around.

If I get off and shoot them, whoever is outside will likely be swiss cheesed by the others. Kevin and I are the first ones at the edge of the landing ramp....and I'm scared. I decide to try and draw fire with the tank, by charging at them. But it doesn't work...and I don't know what to do. Courtney and her rocket are right behind us, and that might be able to finish the Sectoids. If we live to get there.... Digging deep inside, being the hero I know I can be, I bravely march forward and.....stand at the edge of the ramp. If I can get behind the tank, I might be protected from the two...then I will have to kill the 3rd one...and hope there are only 3 here (I knew that jinxing would come back to haunt me.)

Tyson hops down, crouches behind the tank, and auto shots the lower alien. He's in the line of sight of both, but I'm thinking they are too busy looking at displays for reaction shots....hopefully. The first shot hits, but the alien lives! Blood drains from my face as I stare in disbelief....but then the 3rd shot hits and finishes the alien. Whew. Tyson has enough for a snap shot, and it kills the second one. Ahh, what a relief! Not that I'm safe or anything, but at least for the moment. Kevin auto shots the 3rd from the ramp, then runs off too the right. Ok, 3 aliens down...now just to get everyone off the ship. I split into two groups, right down the middle. I've never seen aliens in the houses, so I don't expect any 2nd floor trouble. I've got Kevin, Devyn, Jacque, and Maria attempting to secure the house, the rest are heading left towards a garden, with Courtney primarily being backup.

I hear an attempt at mind control. A Sectoid walks around the left side of a building, shooting through a window, and Mary finishes it with her plasma rifle. I start moving the tank away......when Mijo gets shot in the back from behind!

Not quite the Jesse, he drops, but where did that come from? Had to be from a window, or second story.....ahhhh, but where? We're all in plain view...this isn't good. Devyn uses his quick thinking and shoots through the fence, hoping to allow us some cover in the narrow space.

The shot opens up view on a Cyberdisk, hovering. Devyn fires away, but keeps hitting a wall or something...have to find a better angle. Brave Chelsea marches out, and takes it down. Oh, thank heavens. Now to hopefully find some cover.

I move the tank out....and see a Sectoid with some sort of devilish looking gun. Not wanting to find out what it is, Tyson blasts through the wall. A perfectly lined shot, I wonder if I might hit the alien by accident. But no, so I line up again. And this time I can't even get close to the building. Mary can't either. Kevin steps up, "Guys, this is how it's done," and fells the alien with a perfect 3-straight auto shot. (what Chelsea did before.)

I start scouting out the house. Hmm, it looks like the left side is already clear, so I'm going to send that group to the second house. I don't like these houses. There is one large room, and it makes for great alien shootouts. Or shoot downs.....as has happened when I attempted to advance straight through one once. We'll be careful though. No shootouts today.

Alien turn, I hear some shots, and see a small object tossed into the local house....ohhh, no! But the grenade lands on the already burning second story, so for now we're ok.

But it looks like a well defended alien position behind the fence, we're gonna need luck. Maria chucks a flare, but I still have no good view of anything... Devyn uses the old 'shoot through walls for a better view' tactic, but I still see nothing.

Melissa and Chelsea both move through the back of the fence, behind the house. Chelsea peeks around the corner, and is startled by a floating Cyberdisk. Instead of paying respects, I decide that it would be safer to run....as Cyberdisks can take multiple hits to kill. Cowardice before death, I always say. Chelsea agrees, and moves back. Mary and Tyson both move into position to blast the over sized Frisbee on the next turn, and I hope that no grenades are tossed. The aliens have been really grenade-happy today.

Two shots at Maria, but the fence takes the brunt of the attack. Maria turns and sees one sectoid, moves into position and spots another. She is also unable to show the aliens how there previous attack should have been carried out, and in the excitement, Devyn is also.

But Chelsea once again runs up and saves the day, killing both Sectoids. Using teamwork, Mary shoots a hole in the fence, Tyson kills the Cyberdisk. While this is all great, there are still some unexplored areas that could turn this around quickly. Jacque peeks out the window on the far side of the house, seeing nothing. But with a hunch shot through the fence, another sneaky Cyberdisk. Courtney was moving along the back fence, and has no TUs, but Jacque can only take one more shot, so she ducks behind the window and hopes what she's heard about plasma's taste isn't true...

Alien movement, the Cyberdisk shoots at Courtney, and another grenade, luckily at civilians. The pesky peaking Cyberdisk is finished by Jacque, and I'm thinking it should be the last one.

Devyn eyes the alien, lines up his sights this time, and fires away, opening walls and windows, but at last hitting the creature. Though I'm hoping the mission is over, it pays to be diligent in the easy times....or something like that. I change my mind though, and instead drop the magazines of every heavy plasma. Though that disables half the team, well, I'll live with it. Luckily, it pays off.

One live alien....huh. And I don't think we killed any civilians. No promotions, despite the loss of a sergeant. Or was he a squaddie? Hmm, maybe I should be more intimate with my troops... Great mission, Chelsea gets MVP for excellent Cyberdisk killing as well as great sneakiness. I can't agree more than with sneakiness. I check the haul, and see a lot of plasma junk I don't want, as well as a small launcher and a stun bomb. Ahh, what I needed. Also, Sectoid medic was captured. Huh, well, I guess we'll see. I transfer over some missiles to X-COM USA, and wait for April's funding. With a man down, I pre-order 11 soldiers and 5 more scientists, likely with 5 more scientists to come. We're now down to our last MS....whatever will we do? I check out the recruitment website, but I do want another MS. Hmm, if only I could find an Iranian....

I'm not sure who I want on the next mission...Britt P. for sure though.

The mission was over, and everyone had done well. They had lost a soldier. It wasn't one of Tyson's friends, though it very near could have been. None of his friends had been killed in the last 3 months. Though those who had weren't really his friends, or even his favorite, they were all in this together now. After touchdown, he and Kevin went to the medical wing, where Jesse would soon be fully recovered. And to tell him about what they had just learned.

After relating their story, Jesse agreed. "Yeah, it's like Kevin said, we'd be out here fighting anyway. If I didn't have that armor.... But why you? Are you like a "chosen one" or something? Is there some greater purpose to you being chosen for this specifically? Relating to the invasion and such? I'm just wondering, I would think that there has to be a reason."
Tyson didn't know, and the question wasnt' one that any of them could answer. "I'm going to try and find out what the General knows about all of this. If he knows anything about it. I want to know more about who it was that came to him, who told him about why I was chosen...though he might not know why, he might have a little more info than we have now."
The others agreed.

Large UFO, breezes past the north pole, then skips across the Atlantic. I-2 chases, but is far enough behind it. Once it gets to Africa I send out I-1, but not with either hope or enthusiasm. I send I-2 back to base....wait a second. I-2 has no fuel. Hmmm, he's quite the athlete, keeping that thing in the air without fuel.

Without the use of fuel, I-2 becomes my new scout craft. UFO-12 disappears in Africa, just like everything else. A small UFO pops up, and I figure I'll take it down. Then a large one.....at the same time. Uh oh...what's going on.....guys, that you? Not funny! I've never had this happen before, but I'm hoping it's just coincidence.

Nope, I click center, and another one. Crap, this might be the game over right now!

Or just an alien base down there somewhere! With 3 UFOs, it's guaranteed. A combination of fear, excitement, and the urge to go to the bathroom come over me.
Two UFOs disappear almost instantly, but UFO-15 is still seen. I-1 follows, and it lands.....so we're going out again. I-2 finds the small one, and starts chasing it. There's the alien base...crap. I've got to kill it, fast.

I-1 is over what I assume to be a supply ship, and I fill the Skyranger with everything I've got. Hopefully, we live through this...
